FALLING ROCK TRAIL | RAPID CITY, sd

Falling Rock Trail
Rapid City, SD

Trailhead:
Turn south on Falling Rock Road off Highway 44 West of Rapid City. Follow Falling Rock for ¼ mile or so until you see the parking area on the east side of the road.
Know Before You Go: This is more of an easy outdoor walk than a hike, but tennis shoes are suggested because of the rocky end of the trail.
Length: Half mile out and back.
Time:  20 minutes out and back.
Difficulty level: Easy.
Terrain: Aggregate (small rock).
Dog-friendly: Yes.
Kid-friendly: Yes. Keep a close eye on little ones at the summit as there are no guardrails.

My husband lived in Rapid City, SD during his high school years and found this gem. It’s more of an outdoor walk than a hike, but I’ve included it here because the payoff is incredible.

You walk only a quarter mile east from the Falling Rock trailhead to a grand lookout over Rapid Creek. This gives you spectacular view of Dark Canyon, a beautiful canyon just outside Rapid City off Rimrock Scenic highway.

Be sure to hike to the second lookout further to the northeast as it offers more perspectives of the high canyon walls surrounding the creek. It’s a breathtaking way to spend a short stop to stretch your legs!
