Trail: Fairy Pools, Carbost, Isle of Skye Website: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/fairypools.shtml Know Before You Go: The road to Fairy Pools is very crowded, very narrow, and very dangerous due to the traffic. We recommend going very early in the morning. Take cash to pay the parking meter in case the credit card machine is broken. This is a VERY VERY popular, crowded hike due to the excellent marketing. We enjoyed it, but enjoyed other hikes on Skye much more. Length: 2.5 miles (we went all the way to the end of the Fairy Pools and back to the parking lot) Time: 1 hour Difficulty: Moderate Terrain: Aggregate Dog-Friendly: Yes Kid-Friendly: Yes
The Fairy Pools are a series of beautiful pools and waterfalls on the Isle of Skye. They are said to be named after a legend about a Clan MacLeod chief who married a fairy princess. The pools are also associated with selkies, mythological creatures said to shed their skins on the beach and bathe in the pools at night. You can see where the fanciful names come from as you hike up the trail along this incredible body of water.
This is a VERY VERY popular, crowded hike due to excellent marketing. We enjoyed it, but enjoyed other hikes on Skye much more. We recommend going very early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The hike isn’t difficult - just be sure you go past the first couple of pools because the waterfalls get more beautiful as you go along.
Be sure to use caution when walking on the slick rocks near the edge of the cliffs - these areas can be dangerous.
